Unbeaten RTU nips PCU on Tabi free throws as St. Clare makes it two wins in a row

CYRUS Tabi nailed two free throws with no time left as Rizal Technological University edged Philippine Christian University, 69-68, in the battle of unbeaten teams in the NAASCU Season 17 men's basketball tournament at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong.

Tabi went for the game-winner and drew a foul from Chris Okoronkwo of PCU as time expired, hitting the two free throws that enabled the Blue Thunder to escape with their third win in as many matches

Tabi finished with a game-high 26 points for the Johnedel Cardel-mentored Thunder, who also won over City University of Pasay and St. Francis of Assisi College.

PCU suffered its first setback after two wins over defending champion St.Clare College and Lyceum of Subic Bay.

Later, St. Clare made it two wins in a row by beating St. Francis, 60-52, behind the double-double games of Aris Dionisio and import Mohamed Pare.

Dionisio finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Pare added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Saints, who secured their second straight win after an opening-day loss to the Dolphins last Aug. 17.

Endo Toloso finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for SFAC, which dropped to 0-2.

In other matches, Philippine Merchant Marine School outsteadied AMA University, 79-70, for its first win in two matches in Group A; and New Era University outclassed De La Salle-Araneta University, 70-57, for its second win in three outings in Group B
