ADAMSON demolished College of St. Benilde, 69-55, to clinch the first twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals of the 2nd Dickies-FCBL (Filipino-Chinese Basketball League) Women’s Cup over the weekend at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.
Forward Mary Penaranda struck hardest for Adamson, scoring 10 of her game-high 18 points in the payoff period to help the San Marcelino-based squad beat the Lady Blazers in the battle of frontrunners in this eight-team tournament presented by Dickies.
The win was the fourth straight in as many games for Adamson, which is participating in the tournament as part of its preparation for the coming UAAP season.
For her all-around performance, Penaranda clinched her third Dickies Player of the Game award, further enhancing her bid for the coveted MVP trophy.
The month-long break also did wonders for University of Santo Tomas and Lyceum as they ended three-game losing streaks with big wins over their fancied rivals in the tournament also backed by Smart Telecom, Powerhouse, CW Home Depot, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, and Hapee Toothpaste.
Drawing a 23-point performance from Lore Rivera, the UST Tigresses outlasted the Centro Escolar University Lady Scorpions, 64-61, while the Lady Pirates downed the Lady Archers, 49-40.
Meantime, defending champion Far Eastern University rolled to its third straight victory by crushing Ateneo, 65-47, thanks to the 25-point effort of veteran Camille Sambeli.
The top four teams at the end of the classification phase will earn a twice-to-beat privilege over their rivals in the quarters.
