JOSE Rizal University doused Letran's late-game surge to hammer out an 82-74 win in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Friday.

MJ Dela Virgen scattered 17 points on top of five rebounds and two assists for the Heavy Bombers, who stayed unscathed with a 3-0 card.

Gio Lasquety and Teytey Teodoro added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Behind Rey Nambatac, Letran mounted a furious comeback from an 11-point deficit in the final stretch.

Trying to conjure magic for the Knights, Nambatac dropped five straight points including the booming triple with 1:11 left to close in, 74-78.

But a Lasquety baseline jumper and a pair of free throws by Dela Virgen shut the door on the Knights for good.

JRU coach Vergel Meneses rued the team's complacency in the endgame but remained glad the Heavy Bombers held on.

"Ang tingin nila di makakabalik ang Letran. Ang Letran never-say-die lagi e. Pag magkakampante ka makakahabol sila," said.

"Learning process ito sa amin. I hope we play consistent on defense."

Nambatac erupted with 25 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals but his all-around effort went to waste as the Knights remained winless in three games.

Jeo Ambohot chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
