UNIVERSITY of the East beat Olivarez College, 76-72, to capture the title in the Cobra Energy Drink—9th Asian University Basketball Championship at the Trinity University of Asia (TUA) gym in Quezon City.
The win propelled the team to a perfect 5-0 record in the five-day, single-round tournament also supported by AgriNurture Inc (ANI) and Healthy Options and organized by the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF), in cooperation with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) and Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).
Indonesia Hangtuah (3–2) copped third place after an 83-51 rout of winless Universiti Teknologi MARA of Malaysia (0-5), De La Salle University of Dasmarinas (2-3) finished fourth while host Trinity (1-4) finished fifth in the annual event won by Guangdong University of China last year in Bintulu, Malaysia.
Jess Tanchanco, UE team manager, received the championship trophy from Cobra Energy Drink representative Peewee Lim of Asia Brewery.
UE Red Warrior JM Noble was named tournament’s MVP.
