UNIVERSITY of the East gave Jose Rizal University a dose of its own medicine to barge into the win column of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup with a 99-78 blowout victory on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
In a battle between teams with the same defensive-oriented system, it was the Warriors’ version that proved more effective and resulted in the one-sided win, the UAAP squad’s first in three games.
The Warriors also dealt the Heavy Bombers their second loss in five games in Group A.
“They’re slowly but surely adapting to the system we’re trying to run,” said new Warriors coach Derrick Pumaren, the former JRU consultant for Bombers coach Vergel Meneses.
Bong Galanza fired a team-high 17 points, while Charles Mammie pumped in 11 of his 15 points in the second half, where the Warriors broke the game wide open using a suffocating full-court press that the Bombers failed to break.
JRU also used the same ploy, but the Warriors converted more turnover points, 30-9, and more in transition, 14-10, while limiting the Bombers to just 34-percent shooting from the field.
So suffocating was the Warriors’ defense that the Bombers could come no closer than 21 points in the final frame.
