UNIVERSITY of the East made only three field goals in the fourth quarter but still came out with a 66-58 victory over Adamson to clinch a semifinal berth on Monday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Warriors earned a trip to the semifinals where they will face University of Santo Tomas on Friday.
UE coach Boycie Zamar admitted the team was tired after playing in an invitational tournament in Aklan and holding a team-building program in Boracay for nine days. However, he said there are no excuses for poor play.
“We are very tired,” Zamar said. “We don’t want to make an alibi. For nine days, we have been away pero hindi puwedeng dahilan ’yun. Once you put the UE uniform, you must be ready.”
Adamson took the lead after an 11-0 run to start the fourth but UE finished with a 14-4 blast to take the victory.
“It’s an achievement for us that we were there fighting,” said Zamar.
Roi Sumang had 18 points including a jumper that pushed UE’s lead to 64-56 with 1:37 left in the fourth. Chris Javier added 11 markers while Charles Mammie grabbed 14 rebounds and outdueled fellow African Ingrid Sewa in the fourth period.
UE grabbed a 52-43 lead at the end of the third but went scoreless for nearly four minutes in the fourth. Axel Inigo buried a triple from the left corner as Adamson took a 54-52 advantage.
But the Red Warriors put the game away with defense as they limited the Falcons to only two field goals the rest of the way. Adrian Santos scored a twinner off an offensive board that wrapped an 8-0 blast to give the control back to UE.
Rodney Brondial had 19 points while Sewa added 12 points and 12 rebounds but was a non-factor in the fourth.
