UNIVERSITY of the East pulled off a stunning 68-65 win over league-leading Centro Escolar University-Café France on Wednesday to complete the semis cast in the SMART-PCABL 4th Dickies Cup at the Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
In a game marked by several lead changes, the Lady Warriors proved steadier than the Lady Scorpions as they outscored their University Belt neighbors, 15-11, in the payoff period to take their fifth win in 10 games.
That gave them the fourth spot at the end of the double-round eliminations – thanks mainly to Cherry Ano-os who scored seven of her 10 points in fourth period.
The loss, however, did not affect the Lady Scorpions’ seeding as they remained No. 1 in the semis with a twice-to-beat advantage after finishing with a 7-3 record.
CEU needs to beat UE only once to advance to the final, which is a one-game affair.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas continued its hot streak, trouncing Ateneo-San Miguel Corporation, 65-49, to clinch the second twice-to-beat bonus in the tournament sponsored by CW Home Depot, Powerhouse, K-Tech Sports, Inc., Dickies Underwear and Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.
The win was the fourth straight and sixth overall in 10 games for the Tigresses, who will face the Lady Eagles in the semifinals.
The Lady Eagles also finished third with a 5-5 record, but took the No. 3 spot with a better quotient than the Lady Warriors.
Far Easrtern University-Multimotors ended Adamson’s semis bid by eking out a 51-48 win.
