UE side stuns Eaglets to end Freego Cup dry spell

    May 1, 2013

UNIVERSITY of the East finally barged into the win column of the 6th FCBL-Freego Cup on Tuesday by stunning erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo, while National University pricked the bubble of Mapua at the Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.

The Junior Warriors leaned on the game-long brilliance of Reymar Gaduyac to end a four-game losing run with an 81-79 victory over the Eaglets even as the Bullpups outclassed the Mapua Red Robins, 65-46, in the event presented by Freego.

Gaduyac sizzled for 25 points, including seven in the payoff period to help the Recto-based squad hand the Eaglets their first defeat in four starts.

That enabled the Bullpups to grab solo second who improved to 4-1 in the event also sponsored by Smart, Fresh Gear, Colt Commercial, Powerbest Mrkg. Inc., Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste and Insular Square of Cebu.

Ateneo drew 20 and 19 points from the hot-shooting Thirdy Ravena and Mike Nieto, respectively.

In other games, multi-titled Chiang Kai Shek College notched its second straight win by outlasting Jose Rizal University, 70-62, while University of Perpetual Help tripped University of Santo Tomas, 60-57.

Gaduyac was ably supported by Jonas Briones and Mark del Rosario who tallied 12 markers each as the Junior Warriors revived their faltering semis bid.

The top four finishers in the single-round elims will advance to the knockout semifinals.
