UNIVERSITY of the East made an auspicious debut in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup by thrashing Southwestern University, 81-62, on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Warriors jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back to book their very first win.
Coach Boyzie Zamar however, cautioned the win was not a statement game for the Red Warriors, who this early have been tipped as among the title favorites for the coming UAAP season.
“It’s not a statement game,” said Zamar, who took over from former teammate Jerry Codinera midway last season. “It’s a challenge for the boys.”
“Honestly the push is there,” said Zamar, referring to his players who are out to improve on their 3-11 (win-loss) slate in the UAAP last season.
Roi Sumang finished with an all-around game of 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals, while Adrian Santos added 16 markers. Lord Casajeros added 14 and JM Noble with 10.
UE had the game in the bag as early as the third period when it posted a 79-55 lead.
The Cebu-based SWU squad dropped to an 0-2 win-loss record after falling to Ateneo in its opening game on Saturday night.
