TIP Engineers get back on track with narrow win over Olivarez Sea Lions in UCBL

    Nov 3, 2016

TECHNOLOGICAL Institute of the Philippines rebounded from a shock loss with a 69-65 win over Olivarez College to finish its first round campaign in second place on Thursday in the UCBL at the Olivarez Sports Center.

John Enriquez came through with 18 points while Jorey Napoles and Bryan Santos tallied 12 markers and 12 rebounds apiece as the Engineers booked their fourth win in six contests.

Later, Colegio de San Lorenzo gained a piece of third spot with Olivarez after an 81-51 dismantling of Diliman College.

Stepping up in the absence of slotman Jonjon Gabriel, Louie Vargas delivered the goods for the Griffins with a double-double effort of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

TIP will enter the second round with a 4-2 record behind Centro Escolar University’s immaculate 6-0 slate. More importantly, the Engineers bounced back from a 70-73 loss to the Blue Dragons last week.

Only Pruvil Bermudez scored in twin digits for the Sea Lions with 23 points. Olivarez dropped in a tie with CDSL in third place with a 3-3 record.

The Griffins, who also led by as much as 35 points, also drew a big game from Mark Carongoy, who fired 28 points, as they primed up for their rematch against the Scorpions to open the second round action on Saturday.

“Sinabi sa amin ni coach na huwag i-underestimate ang kalaban namin,” said Vargas, who filled in for flu-stricken Gabriel.

Diliman, which played without coach Rensy Bajar, got 12 points and five rebounds from Romyl Jornacion. The Blue Dragons struggled in the two middle quarters, scoring only a combined 18 points.
