Olivarez College and Technological Institute of the Philippines hope to get back on the winning track when they go up against struggling teams Sunday as the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 action resumes at Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Though coming off a stinging defeat to Diliman College the last time, the Olivarez Sea Lions are still favored in their 12 noon encounter with the Bulacan State University Gold Gears.
The Sea Lions are toting a 2-3 card while the Gold Gears have dropped their last three games after hurdling their opening game assignment.
Reigning league MVP Dominck Fajardo is so far the only consistent cager for the Gold Gears as others like Pato Mendoza and Christian Necio are struggling big time.
“We have to find a way in giving Dominck the ample support that he needs, whether its on the offensive end or on the defensive side. We cannot afford to rely mainly on a single individual,” said coach Antonio Tayao
The Engineers are also sporting a 2-3 card but they are fresh from an 83-68 win over Lyceum-Batangas last Thursday.
They hope to use that win as an added motivation when they clash with the University of Batangas Brahmans at 2 p.m.
TIP needs to beat UB to boost their bid to make it to the “Magic Four.”
“We were able to get back on track but the bigger challenge now is how are we going to sustain it. Our team has been blowing hot and cold for quite awhile and I hope we can finally show signs of consistency,” said Engineers coach Potit de Vera.
Aside from top gun Jorey Napoles, De Vera can also count on Tevita Latu, Joseph Daguro and John Palisoc.
“If we can just play that way from hereon, I think we can make more noise and even pull off big surprises,” said De Vera, who just turned 42 last Wednesday.
