Unbeaten CEU Scorpions first to UCBL semis after 41-point rout of Batangas Brahmans

    Nov 10, 2016

CENTRO Escolar University scored another runaway victory, downing University of Batangas, 98-57, on Thursday to clinch the first slot in the Final Four of the Universities and Colleges Basketball League at the Olivarez Sports Center.

The Scorpions have won all eight games with double-digit margins.

“Hindi namin minamaliit mga kalaban. Kung sino ang makakalaban namin dito, challenge lagi para sa amin,” said CEU’s Jason Opiso, who came through with 18 points and six rebounds.

Lorenz Guinitaran led the way for the Scorpions in a reserve role with 20 points, while Nigerian slotman Ebuka Umeanozie added eight points and four rebounds.

Earlier, Jonjon Gabriel put up a show in the payoff period as Colegio de San Lorenzo repeated over Diliman College, 82-65, in a testy encounter to boost its Final Four bid.

The Griffins survived a physical third quarter that featured four unsportsmanlike fouls and pulled away from a slim 56-53 lead with a 22-5 burst, with Gabriel scoring 10 straight points for a 78-58 lead with 3:44 remaining.

“Focus lang kami sa ginagawa namin,” said Gabriel, who finished with 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. “Binibigyan lang ako ng kumpiyansa ng coach ko.”

CDSL chalked up its fourth win in eight matches, holding a half-a-game lead over fifth-running Bulacan State University (3-4).

The Blue Dragons, who failed to avenge their 30-point blowout loss to the Griffins a week ago, dropped to 2-5 in sixth place, one-and-a-half game out of the No. 4 slot.
