Olivarez College, TIP beat separate foes to boost Final Four bids in UCBL

    Nov 7, 2016

OLIVAREZ College held Bulacan State University to just 11 points in the second quarter and coasted to a vengeful 104-82 win in the second round of the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) on Monday at the Olivarez Sports Center in Paranaque City.

After another slow start that saw them lead by only three points after 10 minutes of play, 27-24, the Sea Lions went to Mavrick Saguiguit and the shooting guard responded with back-to-back triples to pull away for good.

Saguiguit and Richard Singh led Olivarez’s torrid shooting in the stretch and finished with 17 points each as the Sea Lions boosted their Final Four drive with their fourth win in seven games.

The BSU Gold Gears, who beat the Sea Lions, 96-91, dropped to a share of fourth to fifth places with Colegio De San Lorenzo at 3-4.

In the second game, Technological Institute of the Philippines watched University of Batangas’ Ar-Jhay Gabriel bungle his two free throws in the last 20 seconds and escaped with a 73-69 win for its fifth win in seven starts.

Gabriel could have tied the score at 71-all off a Harley Diego’s foul but he crumbled under intense pressure, thus missing his two gift shots.

With the victory, the Engineers strengthened their hold of solo second with 5-2 win-loss slate, while the Brahmans remained winless in seven matches.

The 5-foot-11 Saguiguit finished 3-of-7 from the 3-point zone to highlight a solid all-around showing while Singh made all but three of his 10 attempts from the 2-point zone.
