THEY'RE more than mere numbers, and there's more to them than meets the eye.

From important dates in their lives to lucky numbers to mere coincidence, there's usually a compelling story behind the numbers your favorite players wear on their backs.

And more often that not, these stories will either surprise you or make you feel closer to their cage idols.

Here's No. 5 of our Jersey Story series:

JERON Teng said he never planned to wear jersey number 21 for La Salle, having been used to donning No. 12 during his high school days with Xavier.

But when he set foot on La Salle's campus along Taft Avenue, Teng said he was forced to wear the number since the no. 12 had already been taken by veteran guard LA Revilla.

“’Yun lang ‘yung available sa akin that time,” recalled Teng. “That time nandoon si LA (Revilla).”

The No. 12 has held special meaning for Teng, who donned it during a memorable high school career with Xavier highlgihted by a record 104-points performance in one game in the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association.

When the son of former PBA cager Alvin Teng moved to De La Salle, he immediately made an impact by winning the UAAP Rookie of the Year award and a spot in the Mythical Five right on his freshman year in 2012.

Teng was also adjudged the Finals MVP the following year when the Green Archers beat a University of Santo Tomas team led by his brother Jeric for the Season 76 men’s basketball championship.

Despite parting with his favorite jersey number from high school, Teng doesn’t mind it. He looks forward to reaching new heights with his No. 21.

He even found relevance in No. 21 that has made him come to love his current jersey number.

“Medyo relevant din dahil birthday ko is March 21,” Teng said.
