ATENEO notched its third straight win, beating a hard-fighting University of the East, 77-72, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Von Pessumal scored 21 points as the Blue Eagles overcame a comeback attempt by the Red Warriors in the fourth period.

Ateneo led by as many as 17 points and went on to stretch its win streak to three after an opening-day loss.

Kiefer Ravena had 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists for the Blue Eagles, who took a 28-16 advantage in the second period and were up 43-33 at halftime.

Pessumal scored 15 points in the second quarter for his breakout game of the season.

“This is a tough win for us because its our third game in a week,” said Ateneo coach Bo Perasol.

“This is typically tough for Kiefer and Von because they get the heaviest minutes.”

“But although they are tired, Kiefer nearly had a triple-double and Von, for the first time, got his shots from the outside,” Perasol added.

Pessumal broke his shooting slide against UE, hitting six of his 10 shots from three-point line.

The Red Warriors were able to cut the deficit to three points with 28 seconds to play in the fourth before Ravena hit a jumper to make it a five-point game.

Bon Batiller had 19 points for the Red Warriors, whose two-game winning streak was snapped for a 2-2 win-loss card.
