Two UST women players suspended for punching, elbowing NU rivals in UAAP game

TWO University of Santo Tomas players have been suspended for punching and elbowing rivals from National University in Saturday’s women’s basketball action at the Blue Eagle Gym.

UAAP commissioner Andy Jao said Kim Reyes and Bettina Buenaflor have been suspended for one game after being ejected for disqualifying fouls during the Tigresses loss to National University on Saturday.

According to a letter signed by Jao, Reyes was slapped with a disqualifying foul for punching an NU player at the 6:36 mark of third quarter while Buenaflor was given the same penalty for elbowing an opponent with 18 seconds left in the same quarter.

Disqualifying fouls merit an automatic one-game suspensions under league rules.

Due to the suspensions, Reyes and Buenaflor will miss UST’s game against De La Salle on Wednesday morning at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The two disqualifying fouls preceded another incident where a UST player allegedly slapped two NU players during the traditional postgame handshake following the Lady Bulldogs’ win over the Tigresses.

In its complaint, NU described the player as someone who sported the number 11 jersey. Based on the official lineup, the player wearing the jersey number is Love Nartates.

Jao has summoned the UST player along with head coach Chris Cantonjos, who will also be asked to explain his side after a collision with referee Karl Marcines during the same game.
