UE braces for war as UST eyes to grab last chance at averting disaster of winless season
Derrick Pumaren and Boy Sablan have one last chance of ending a disappointing season on a strong note.

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas looks to avoid a winless season on Sunday when the Growling Tigers go up against University of the East in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Game time is at 12 noon right before the battle of archrivals between Ateneo and La Salle.

The Growling Tigers are seeking to avoid a futile record of going winless in an entire season. The last time a UAAP team went winless was University of the Philippines in 2010 when the Maroons lost all 14 games.

UST coach Boy Sablan’s wards have the luxury of a one-week break to prepare against UE. The Tigers lost to Ateneo, 102-83.

“We want to win that final game. We will prepare for it. Gawin namin ‘yung dapat naming gawin just like ‘yung  preparation na ginagawa namin sa ibang kalaban,” said Sablan.

UE, however, will perhaps have the psychological advantage after the Red Warriors overcame the Growling Tigers in the first round, 96-91.

The Red Warriors, holding a 3-10 win-loss record, are also out to surpass their win total last year.

“You're only as good as your last game and that's how you want to end. We know also that UST is hungry. They want to get their first win. Even though they are 0-13, they are a lot better than their standing right now,” said UE coach Derrick Pumaren.
