UNIVERSITY of the Philippines overcame a slow start to turn back University of Perpetual Help 77-63 for its third straight win in the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup on Friday in San Juan.

Paul Desiderio finished with 20 points spiked by five triples off the bench to lead the Maroons, who pulled away from a nip-and-tuck first half with a big third-quarter run.

Without Prince Eze to man the paint for the Altas, UP attacked ferociously inside to choke the life out of Perpetual and improve to 3-3 for the tournament.

UP coach Bo Perasol, however, was far from pleased.

"As I’ve said, there are wins that I really don’t like and losses that I like.  These are some of the wins I don’t like because I think we didn’t exert too much effort," said Perasol.

"It was good that we were able to come back in the end but for us to be able to win at a higher level, we need to be consistent with what we do," he added.

Gelo Vito added 13 points and 14 boards for the Maroons while Bright Akhuetie finished with 10 points and eight rebounds against his former team.

Edgar Charcos paced the Altas with 11 points, four assists and four steals as Tonton Peralta and Julius Tiburcio chipped in 10 markers for the 0-3 Altas.
