Quick-fire Maroons carry momentum of FBA title run to new UAAP season
The UP Maroons lifted the FBA championship during the offseason.

THE busy offseason for University of the Philippines has contributed to the Fighting Maroons’ early success in UAAP Season 78.

Prior to the start of their campaign, the Maroons took time to compete in several tournaments including the Filsports Basketball Association (FBA), a regional grassroots league in which they carried the banner of Quezon City during the maiden conference dubbed ‘Unity Games.’

Immediately, the team found success as it came away with the championship last summer, beating top-seed Foton in the winner-take-all match.

UP coach Rensy Bajar acknowledged the importance of the team’s stint in the FBA in preparing the Maroons for the UAAP, especially the entire coaching staff which is in its first year at the helm.

“Nagkaroon kami ng mga collective ideas on how to run the team, at kung ano ‘yung magiging strength ng team. Sa araw-araw namin na pagpa-practice, naayos namin ‘yung team,” said Bajar.

So far, UP has been doing well after winning its first two games of the season – a first for the school in a decade.

Now, the Maroons will go for win No. 3 on Sunday against fellow undefeated University of Santo Tomas.

The FBA management is glad to have contributed to the early success of one of their teams.

“We are elated with what our regional, grassroots, and amateur approach has provided towards our teams specifically in UP’s case. Their confidence has indeed, grown immensely with their experience in the FBA,” said commissioner Vince Hizon.

“I have been receiving texts and calls from various people in the sports industry connecting UP’s success in the UAAP with their recent championship in the FBA. We are humbled by this and are glad that these players having lived up to what they’ve learned from our league. I also commend their team management and coaching staff for a job well done,” FBA president LJ Serrano added.
