UNIVERSITY of the Philippines is expected to name a new head coach by January as the search committee has asked for a deadline extension to evaluate a long list of applicants for the Maroons post.

UP College of Human Kinetics Dean Ronnie Dizer said the search committee that includes GlobalPort team consultant Pido Jarencio, has requested for more time to evaluate the candidates after originally setting a December 15 deadline to recommend who will take over the post left by Rey Madrid.

“The committee requested for an extension dahil maraming aplikante,” Dizer said. “Gusto nilang makasiguro.

“Tingin nila hindi nila aabutin ‘yung date na binigay ko so they requested na sa January na lang. Tutal nagkaroon naman ng calendar shift sa classes so pumayag naman kami,” added the UP official.

Dizer declined to reveal the names of the candidates since there were so many who applied for the post that also included non-alumnus.

The Fighting Maroons are searching for a new coach to replace Madrid, citing the need for a full-time mentor to handle the job.

The search committee includes current UP Maroons team manager Dan Palami, UP athletic director Ariel Juliano, former UP CHK dean Artemio Isidro, and College of Engineering Dean Aurora Matias.

Dizer reiterated Jarencio is still part of the search committee and has not applied for the position, even if the former University of Santo Tomas coach is now eligible for the Maroons job after sliding down to a consultancy role with PBA ballclub GlobalPort.

“Part pa rin siya ng basketball reference. Pero hindi siya nag-apply. Hindi totoo ‘yun,” said Dizer.
