After fresh changes, UP Maroons to unveil new logo at pep rally

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines unveiled the new logo of the Fighting Maroons last month, which saw the school finally veer away from its traditional ‘The Oblation’ symbol.

UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan told the school decided to make the changes as it has become uncomfortable using the Oblation as the team logo and on items that could desecrate the sanctity of the institution’s landmark.

“We felt uncomfortable na, as part of marketing, ginagamit kung saan saan,” said Tan. “I think the one that left us really uncomfortable was the idea na ang Oblation will be on slippers na aapak-apakan.”

Tan also said UP was the only UAAP school that doesn’t actually have a true logo related to its moniker.

“If you look at other logos of the UAAP members, iba ‘yung logo nila sa school seal. Because school seals are almost sacred. ‘Yung Oblation kasi, there are copyright rules,” he said.

Initially, the school’s new logo featured a maroon-colored clenched fist designed by notable graphic artists who are alumni of the state-run university.

Reactions though were mixed about the logo, especially when it leaked online showing a design bearing a warrior image.

Some netizens later branded it as ‘Datu Puti,’ referring to the logo of a popular vinegar brand.

Eventually, changes were again made to pave the way for the current logo branded as ‘M-Cut’ which will be used by the school when it hosts Season 78 of the UAAP.

“We had another design which, unfortunately, if you remember, nag-leak out na kamukha daw Datu Puti. So in the end, mabuti’t magagaling ang ating mga alumni na graphic designers,” said Tan.

Tan, however, made it clear the Oblation will still be used, but only on the team uniforms.

“They are only for uniforms and exclusive sa UP,” Tan said.

The new logo will officially be launched at the school’s pep rally this week.
