THE UAAP Season 79 seniors basketball tournament is expected to open with a bang.

Although host University of Santo Tomas has been tight-lipped about details regarding the coming season, sources said Season 79 is expected to hold on to the league's past tradition of opening on the first Saturday of September, which falls on September 3.

And using the formula for the scheduling of games based on the previous year’s placings, the opening playdate will immediately feature an anticipated match-up between preseason favorite La Salle and Adamson with former coach Franz Pumaren now at the helm of the Falcons.

In missing the Final Four last year, the Green Archers, who finished fifth in Season 78, will take on the seventh-ranked squad in Adamson. But the Green Archers, featuring Jeron Teng and Cameroonian sensation Ben Mbala, are expected to be in the hunt for the title following their conquest of the Filoil preseason tournament while the Falcons are starting anew with Pumaren.

University of the East and University of the Philippines are also expected to be part of opening day action through the 6 vs. 8 match-up formula.

University of Santo Tomas takes on National University, and Season 78 champion Far Eastern University battles Ateneo in games to be played the following day, September 4.
