NU Lady Bulldogs one win away from elims sweep and thrice-to-beat advantage in UAAP women's basketball finals

REIGNING champion National University is one win away from a return trip to the UAAP women’s basketball finals after whipping University of the Philippines, 87-39, on Wednesday at the Blue Eagle gym.

MVP Afril Bernardino had another solid outing, registering 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, while Shelley Gupilan added 15 points as the Lady Bulldogs extended their winning run to 13 games, 29 including last season’s run to the title.

Camille Claro delivered the key baskets down the stretch as La Salle, bracing for its much-anticipated rematch with NU, hacked out a 63-58 victory over Ateneo.

The Lady Archers rose to 12-1 and will seek to derail the Lady Bulldogs’ bid for another double-round elimination round sweep on Sunday.

Ara Abaca came through with 16 points, Alyanna Vergara had 14 points and Ana Castillo had a double-double effort of 10 points and 10 rebounds for La Salle, which won 12 straight after dropping its season opener to NU.

University of the East and University of Santo Tomas, meanwhile, remain in a tight battle for the third spot in the semifinals after beating separate foes.

Ruthlaine Tacula had 20 points, while Eunique Chan added 12 points and 15 rebounds as the Lady Warriors crushed Adamson University, 67-42.

Candice Magdaluyo scored 17 and Bettina Penaflor had 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigresses downed also-ran Far Eastern University, 66-53.

UE and UST, which will dispute the third semis berth on Sunday, improved to 6-7.

The Lady Eagles dropped to 5-8 in sixth spot but still have a shot at a playoff against the loser of the Lady Warriors-Tigresses match if they beat the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Maroons and the Lady Falcons bowed out of contention with their ninth loss in 13 games, while the Lady Tamaraws fell to 2-11 in last place.
