Tab Baldwin shrugs off talks on elims sweep, says unbeaten Blue Eagles far from perfect
Tab Baldwin was pleased with the Ateneo offense but was not satisfied with the patchy defense against UE. Marlo Cueto

TALK of an Ateneo sweep in the elimination round of UAAP Season 80 is getting louder and louder but head coach Tab Baldwin wants none of it.

“I don’t care if we are one win away from the sweep or 500 wins away from a sweep, the only game that matters is UST,” said Baldwin, referring to Ateneo’s next match against University of Santo Tomas next Saturday.

“And before that, the only thing that matters is practice on Monday,” Baldwin said.

The Blue Eagles are three victories away from a sweep of the eliminations after beating University of the East, 97-73, on Saturday. In the win, Ateneo clinched the twice-to-beat advantage in the semis, but the Blue Eagles may not even need such an edge if they complete the elims sweep as they will advance outright to the finals.

Still the veteran coach in the international basketball scene pointed out that he's keeping the Blue Eagles focused on their performance, instead of looking to far ahead with the elims sweep.

“We talked this week only about this game. We want to focus on playing this game well. What’s important for us is the quality of our performance. We think that if we perform well, the results will take care of itself,” said the former Gilas Pilipinas coach.

Even though the Blue Eagles continue their unbeaten slate, Baldwin still sees room for improvement for his team following the UE game.

“Our offense was pretty good but our defense was a little bit patchy. Sixteen turnovers is not really where we want to be. Always things to improve on but I think, overall, we rebounded the ball well and our offensive execution was pretty sharp.

“A lot to be pleased about but a lot to improve on,” said Baldwin.
