Tab Baldwin dismisses league-ordered switch from Ateneo consultant to coach as 'irrelevant'

TAB Baldwin dismissed his switch from Ateneo consultant to head coach as 'irrelevant,' saying nothing has changed as far as his work with the Blue Eagles is concerned.

Ateneo named Baldwin as consultant and not as coach prior to the season in the face of a warning that the hiring of a foreign coach in a major league is against the law.

However, the UAAP ordered Ateneo to drop the consultant title and instead formally name Baldwin as coach following complaints from other member teams.

According to the teams, Baldwin, as consultant, is exempted from being ejected from the game as warnings and technicals called on him against the game are awarded instead to the head coach, in this case Sandy Arespacochaga.

But as far as the concurrent national coach is concerned, nothing's changed in the way he's running the Blue Eagles' program.

“It’s irrelevant,” said Baldwin curtly. “We’ve been working the exact same way from Day One.”

The Gilas coach added: “I think people who want to get hung up on the title, they should run for public office.”

Instead, Baldwin said he is more concerned about the form of an Ateneo side that needs to bounce back strong after a stinging loss at the hands of University of the Philippines over the weekend.

“The Ateneo players, they know the expectations. It hit them hard. But at the same time, they are Ateneo players. They understand the expectation to stand up, bounce back, and carry the burden because there is a great reward in being an Ateneo player," he said.

“But having a great rewards comes with great responsibility. There will be tough times when we don’t succeed and we didn’t succeed,” Baldwin said.
