Ups and downs part of young Blue Eagles' growing pains, says Tab Baldwin

ATENEO consultant Tab Baldwin set conservative targets for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 79 - and happily reported the team met his expectations at the end of the first round.

Baldwin admitted finishing 4-3 win-loss at the halfway mark of the eliminations is already a good accomplishment for a young team like the Blue Eagles.

“I’m actually pretty satisfied that we are 4-3 right now,” said Baldwin. “I didn’t really start the season thinking that we are going to be 2-5 or 6-1. I kinda said to take it game by game.”

One of the four Ateneo victories came against Far Eastern University, which is second in the team standings. Ateneo also could have won more if not for that game-winning basket by Dawn Ochea for Adamson in a one-point loss.

Thirdy Ravena has been anchoring the Blue Eagles this season, averaging close to 12 points a game, while unheralded guard Anton Asistio has also come into his own, posting an 11-point average through seven matches.

The Blue Eagles had a two-game win streak going before they were sent crashing back to earth by unbeaten leader La Salle where Baldwin admitted his team could have played better in a 97-81 loss last October 2.

“It’s disappointing that we didn’t play better today. After the first six games, I thought we are going to put on a better showing but I have to give a lot of credit to La Salle. I think they looked better than what we saw in the other games. Obviously, it’s a huge game for them and they showed up and played great basketball,” said the Ateneo coach.

Baldwin said the ups and downs are only part of the growing pains of a young side like Ateneo.

“I think that anybody that probably understands basketball teams or sporting teams particularly at this age, this collegiate age, they understand that they’ll have ups and downs,” Baldwin said.
