Tab Baldwin insists tough loss to UP part of learning curve for 'inexperienced' Blue Eagles

ATENEO coach Tab Baldwin hopes the Blue Eagles will take something out of the tough loss they suffered against University of the Philippines on Saturday—the team’s first against the Maroons in seven years.

Baldwin reiterated the season is going to be a learning process for the Blue Eagles after they committed more turnovers and grabbed less rebounds in a closely-contested ballgame.

The Blue Eagles were outplayed by the Maroons, 56-52, for the team’s first loss to its Katipunan neighbor since 2009. And for Baldwin, the experience of the defeat will help them move forward.

“We didn’t have the right formula to win this game. It’s not one of the times when you want to say ‘I told you so’ but it’s going to be the kind of year for this team that we are going to get some tough lessons along the way,” said Baldwin.

Adrian Wong and Chibueze Ikeh had 10 points each for the Blue Eagles, but they were the only double digit scorers for the squad. Thirdy Ravena had only six markers, while Anton Asistio was held scoreless in the contest.

Baldwin reiterated the Blue Eagles need to learn quick from these kinds of games in order to improve.

“We have to learn the game. We are short of experience and short of basketball knowledge on this team and we are trying to progress that as quickly as we can… We weren’t trying to make adjustments and with such a young team, we want timeouts to be five minutes long instead of one. It’s hard to get cohesion unless we are doing what we are exactly doing in practice with this team. But they are learning,” said Baldwin.

The Gilas Pilipinas mentor also preached patience as ups-and-downs will be natural for the young Blue Eagles squad in Season 79.

“We are going to have games where we will surprise people like FEU in the first round, We will get wins that is probably unexpected, and we may have tough nights like tonight where we don’t find solutions and we end up at the wrong side of the ledger,” said Baldwin.
