REGIE Boy Basibas delivered the numbers that Karim Abdul had been expecting from the University of Santo Tomas backups, the rookie out of Leyte coming up with a double-double performance in a 77-65 win over University of the Philippines on Wednesday in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the MOA Arena.

Abdul came up with the usual contributions as he also put up double-doubles of 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Basibas had 16 and 18.

The Tigers improved their win-loss record to 5-5, tying University of the East for fifth place in the standings, two games behind third-running National University and Ateneo (7-3).

UST hopes to stay in contention for a Final Four seat as it takes on Ateneo on Saturday.

“Buhay pa kami sa Final Four,” said UST coach Bong de la Cruz. “Kailangan namin one game at a time. Every possession counts. ‘Yun na ’yung battle cry namin ngayon.”

UST had to work hard as UP managed to keep pace in the third, 42-42. The Tigers pulled away in the fourth with a 9-0 run to take the victory.

UP coach Rey Madrid was sent off in the first quarter for continuous complaining and the Maroons ended up absorbing their ninth loss in 11 games.

Mikee Reyes was the lone double digit scorer for the Maroons with 22 points.
