FORMER University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio was pleasantly surprised by how Ed Daquiaog has improved by leap and bounds after seeing his former player score a season-high 34 points against University of the East in Season 78 of the UAAP.

Jarencio witnessed Daquioag’s scorching performance in the 83-76 win over the Red Warriors from the stands of the Smart Araneta Coliseum after showing up to support the same team he powered to the championship in 2006.

The former UST star said he’s glad to see Daquioag playing at a high level, marveling at the big leap in his game in such a short span of time.

“Ang kinagulat ko talaga si Daquioag. Grabe ‘yung inimprove niya,” said Jarencio in an interview with a few sportswriters even before Daquioag exploded for 34 points.

It was the second time Jarencio watched the UAAP games this season, having watched the Tigers’ encounter against University of the Philippines.

The GlobalPort coach in the PBA also praised the level of maturity in Kevin Ferrer's game, but reserved his biggest praise for Daquioag.

“Nag-mature na rin si Kevin pero surprisingly, si Daquioag talaga ‘yung nag-step ng husto. Sa nakikita ko, grabe talaga,” said Jarencio.

Daquioag admitted he has been working hard to prepare for the jump to the PBA.

“Sinet ko na rin sa sarili ko. Goal ko is to go sa PBA. Higher level na so kailangan i-level up ko sarili ko dun,” Daquioag said.

Although impressed, Jarencio warned Daquioag the PBA is a whole new ballgame.

“Siguro more experience, more maturity pa,” said Jarencio. “Laro siya sa D-League. After D-League, tignan natin kung aangat pa lalo ‘yung laro niya.”
