SAN JUAN, Ilocos Sur — Scouts from Metro Manila schools were spotted at the 2018 Palarong Pambansa secondary boys basketball tournament, hoping to find diamonds in the rough.

Representatives from UAAP teams National University and University of Santo Tomas were seen on the first day of competitions on Monday at the San Juan Covered Court, about 25 kilometers away from the main Palaro hub in Vigan.

More school teams are expected to send scouts to Ilocos Sur as they look for talent, not only in basketball but also in other sports, to beef up their pool at the high school and college level.

So far, the secondary boys basketball tournament has been well-received by folks here in this Ilocos Sur town.

With bleachers seats limited, spectators either sit on the floor or stand. Some of the fans were even spotted atop sacks of rice to get a better view.

The entire secondary boys tournament will be held here, with the championship game set on Saturday morning.

National Capital Region, Calabarzon, Central Visayas, Central Luzon and Western Visayas are expected to figure prominently in the tournament.

The core of the National University squad that won the NBTC League recently is representing NCR.
