NU Lady Bulldogs stamp class anew after bagging inaugural UAAP 3x3 title over Adamson

NATIONAL University’s succcessful women’s basketball program is at it again after capturing the first-ever UAAP 3x3 women’s basketball title on Sunday with a 15-6 win over Adamson at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

Three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Afril Bernardino returned for another stint with the Lady Bulldogs as she joined forces with Season 80 MVP Jack Danielle Animam, Ria Nabalan, and Annick Fabienne Edimo Tiky.

Eligibility for the inaugural 3x3 tournament, a showcase event of the league, had been relaxed, making Bernardino, who is still enrolled in the school, qualified to play despite already exhausting her playing years in 5-on-5 ball.

NU swept Group B by beating Far Eastern University (15-9), University of Santo Tomas, (14-8), and University of the Philippines (13-6).

The Lady Bulldogs beat Ateneo in a low scoring affair, 10-5, in their semifinal tiff.

NU coach Patrick Aquino said the team prepared for a month despite a stacked line-up that included two league MVPs.

“Hindi lang regular kasi minsan wala si Afril, minsan nandito. We were really practicing with the other players. They were helping us a lot. Lahat nagtulong-tulong for this,” Aquino said.
