Ginebra-Purefoods match set to be played on same day as Ateneo-La Salle volleyball match

WILL the PBA's keenly awaited Ginebra versus Purefoods match and the second Ateneo-La Salle women’s volleyball showdown in the UAAP be played on the same date?

That became a possibilit after the UAAP released an initial schedule on Tuesday that pencilled February 22 as the next playdate of the second-round match between the first and second ranked teams of the first round to be played at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Arch-rivals Ateneo and La Salle, two popular teams who played in the UAAP finals last season and in a rematch over the weekend, emerged as the top two teams of the first round, in that order.

Host University of the East, however, is set to issue a revised schedule for the women’s volleyball competition. It is still unclear what adjustments the UAAP will make - whether it would be a change of venue or a change in date - but there is the possibility that the two biggest crowd-drawing games in Philippine sports will be played on the same day.

The PBA Commissioner’s Cup match-up between Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods - the two biggest crowd-drawers in the pro league today - is also scheduled on February 22 at the Big Dome.

Still, drawing huge crowds doesn't figure to be a problem, even if the two marquee matches are played on the same date.

On Sunday, no less than 18,489 fans trooped to the Mall of Asia Arena to watch the Lady Eagles beat the Lady Spikers in a thrilling five-setter.

On the same day, Game Three of the Philippine Cup Finals between Alaska and San Miguel Beer was played at the Big Dome, drawing a crowd of 13,785.

That's more than 32,000 fans turning up to watch two sports events in one day.
