KEVIN Ferrer finally showed up just in time for the final practice of Gilas Pilipinas for the year.

Don’t look now, but Mac Belo is about to come in when the national team conducts its first training for the year 2016.

The Finals MVP for Far Eastern University in the recent UAAP men’s basketball championship, is expected to be the next college player to join Gilas in its Monday night training after fellow amateur stars Kiefer Ravena and Ferrer.

FEU coach and Gilas deputy Nash Racela admitted Belo received a call-up to begin attending the national team’s weekly practice.

“I think nagbigay sila ng invitation sa tatlo, hindi lang siya dumating,” said Racela after Gilas concluded practice on a rainy Monday night at the Meralco gym.

“Maybe (by) January na,” he added.

Gilas coach Tab Baldwin did confirm the possibility of a couple of more college players joining the team once it resumes practice by next year.

“Probably,” was his curt reply when asked about the matter, although he didn’t elaborate on who the other young players are coming in.

“Id’ say it’s really good for the young guys and the environment that we have here. They give a little bit of energy and intensity that we’re lacking sometimes and obviously now bodies that we’re also lacking. I think it’s a positive all the time.

“They’re just here at my behest,” said Baldwin of Ravena and Ferrer’s presence. “They’re helping us out, but obviously it’s something good for them and it makes a good impression on the Gilas coaching staff for the future whenever that future is.”

Apart from the three, there are also other college players included in Gilas’ short list of invitees, according to Racela.

“Nagbato lang kami (coaching staff) ng mga pangalan, pero nothing definite pa,” said the FEU mentor.

He refused to say however, who are the other players in the short list.

Racela is also clueless on whether college players had the blessing of their respective schools to join the weekly practice of Gilas, although he doesn’t see such problem arising in the case of Ravena, Ferrer, and Belo.

“Yung tatlo naman kasi graduate na, so tapos na ang school commitment nila,” added the Gilas deputy, who nonetheless, hinted that ‘most of those in the list are done na with college.’
