Lady Archers, Lady Bulldogs score fifth straight wins in UAAP women's basketball

LA Salle and National University continued to steamroller the opposition as the 1-2 finishers last season extended their perfect runs to five games in the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The defending champions Lady Archers built a 15-point third quarter lead and coasted to a 48-39 win over Ateneo, while the Lady Bulldogs used a huge second half to drub Far Eastern University, 56-40.

University of the East stunned Adamson University, 54-53, in overtime, while University of Santo Tomas barely avoided the upset axe with a 44-43 squeaker over University of the Philippines, forcing a five-way tie for third spot.

De La Salle pulled away in the third period as Cass Santos, Trisha Piatos and Nicole Garcia combined for 15 points for a 44-29 advantage. They never looked back from there.

The Lady Archers overcame Lady Eagles center Danica Jose’s double-double outing of 17 points and 22 rebounds.

Kristine Abriam shot 16 points while Afril Bernardino added points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs erased the Lady Tamaraws’ 20-16 halftime lead and turned it into a 35-24 advantage entering the payoff period.

Ruthlaine Tacula split her charities in the final 17 seconds and the Lady Warriors needed one big defensive stop against the Lady Falcons in the endgame to preserve the victory. Tacula finished with 13 points and pulled down 12 boards.

The Tigresses went scoreless in the final 3:17 after a Kristine Siapoc basket but they held on to send the Lady Maroons to their fifth consecutive defeat.

UE and UST forced a five-way logjam in third place at 2-3 with Ateneo, Adamson and FEU.

Standings: DLSU 5-0, NU 5-0, ADMU 2-3, AdU 2-3, FEU 2-3, UE 2-3, UST 2-3, UP 0-5.
