SUPPORTERS of longtime rivals Ateneo and La Salle have been urged to wear black during the two schools' marquee game in the UAAP Season 79 men's basketball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

A memorandum circulated by Ateneo officials and signed by president Jose Ramon Villarin SJ urged Blue Eagles supporters to wear black garments or accessories to the first Ateneo-La Salle game of the season.

The 'solidarity gesture,' the memo said, is to "express solidarity with victims of human rights violations and with all others struggling to uphold human rights in the country."

The move is apparently in protest of the mounting accusations of 'extra-judicial killings' that have marred the administration of President Duterte in its first few months as well as plan to bury the remains of former President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

A parallel invitation has been circulated by De La Salle officials, signed by Bro. Michael Broughton, vice president for Lasallian Mission.

"In light of considerable sentiments and convictions expressed by various sectors of both the De La Salle and Ateneo de Manila university communities expressing opposition to the possible Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani and impassioned concern about the emergence of a culture of death stemming from the increasing number of extrajudicial killings in the country, those of you who may be going to the DLSU-AdMU UAAP men's basketball game this Sunday are invited to consider symbolically expressing such sentiments and convictions by wearing either black garments or black clothing accessories," Broughton said.

This is not the first time the two UAAP rivals will be teaming up to make a political statement. In 2009, supporters from both camps wore yellow to pay their final respects to former President Cory Aquino, just days after her burial.
