Baby Tams guard L-Jay Gonzales says he is staying at FEU, already training with Tamaraws

FAR Eastern University juniors guard L-Jay Gonzales is committed to staying with the Tamaraws in the seniors division.

The finals Most Valuable Player in Season 79 and part of the Mythical Five in Season 80, Gonzales said he has already been joining Tamaraws’ training since the Baby Tamaraws were eliminated from the Season 80 juniors basketball tournament.

“Nagte-training na po ako sa seniors. Tapos sinabi ko tapusin ko lang ‘yung studies ko tapos training na ako sa seniors. Nag-stay na po kasi ako, hindi ako lilipat,” said Gonzales during the Slam Rising Stars Classic press conference.

Gonzales averaged 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.3 steals in Season 80, earning a place in the Mythical Five with Most Valuable Player CJ Cansino of University of Sto. Tomas, and Kai Sotto, SJ Belangel and Dave Ildefonso of Ateneo.

Gonzales said it is difficult to leave the school which is like a family to him.

“Parang loyal na ako. Dun na ako lumaki. ‘Yung puso ko nasa FEU na,” the 19-year-old Gonzales said.

“Sila po ’yung nag-alaga sa akin, ’yung kumuha sa akin para gumaling ako. Sobrang nagpapasalamat ako sa FEU,” said Gonzales.

The player from Isabela said he looks up to the members of the seniors team as his ‘kuya’ and will do his best to get better.

“Sobrang sarap ng feeling na ‘yung mga kuya mo, kasama mo sa training. Sa akin, kung ano pa ‘yung kulang ko, magpupursigi pa ako na iangat ang sarili ko,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales is one of the 24 players selected to play in the Slam Rising Stars Classic on March 18 at the Gatorade Hoops Center.
