Asked if he can still perform dunk contest-worthy slams, Kiefer Ravena says, “Age is getting there ... I’m now trying to keep things as simple as possible.” Jerome Ascano

KIEFER Ravena will take part in the slam dunk side event of the 2015 FIBA 3x3 All Stars in Doha, Qatar, not as a participant but as one of the judges.

Ravena said he was advised on short notice that other than suiting up in the exhibition match pitting Team Philippines and Team Qatar, the two-time UAAP MVP from Ateneo will also serve as part of the panel of judges calling the shots on the dunk contest set this Friday.

Ravena, along with fellow college stars Jeron Teng, Ola Adeogun, and Bright Akhuetie together with the rest of the Philippine delegation left for Qatar on Wednesday.

“Nagulat nga ako when I was told about it by sir (Sonny) Barrios,” said the son of former players Bong and Mozzy Ravena. “But it’s going to be a great experience, very honored about it. First time kong mag-represent ng bansa sa 3x3, pero napili ako agad na mag-judge (sa slam dunk).”

Can he still dunk? Kiefer was asked, recalling how he once took off from the baseline and soared high for an emphatic dunk against University of Santo Tomas big man Karim Abdul during a UAAP game three years ago.

“Age is getting there,” a smiling Ravena replied. “I’m now trying to keep things as simple as possible.”

It’s the first time the national team member will be going to Qatar and admitted he can’t wait to play before an expected huge Filipino crowd in the Middle East.

“More than playing, I’m actually excited to play in front of the Filipino crowd. I have relatives there, kaya masaya ito,” he said.

Team Qatar will be composed of Faris Avdic, Emir Mujlic, Nedim Muslic, and Seydou Ndoye.
