Jjay Alejandro considers Season 80 one of the best in his college career despite Bulldogs’ early exit
Jjay Alejandro was part of the champion Bulldogs in Season 77, but says being captain of the Season 80 NU squad was also very special even though they fell short of the semifinals. Marlo Cueto

JJAY Alejandro fought off tears as faced reporters after his final game in the UAAP with National University.

“Hindi ako umiyak, tanong mo sa kanila,” said Alejandro.

Alejandro said he will cherish his final season after being given the opportunity to become a team leader, even as the season did not turn out the way he wanted.

“It was fun lalo na ’yung last year ko with coach Jamike. ’Yun ang best memories ko. Other than that, ’yung Season 77, ’yung championship namin. I think binigay ko ’yung best ko all throughout my UAAP career. Wala akong regrets,” said the 22-year-old Alejandro.

While the 2014 title was special for him, Alejandro said being the team captain in his final year during the first season of Jamike Jarin is right up there as far as his unforgettable experiences in college is concerned.

“Ang pinaka-special doon, nagkaroon ako ng opportunity na maglaro under coach Jamike,” said Alejandro. “Alam naman natin na multi-titled si coach sa high school, college, UAAP, NCAA, even PBA. Ang masarap na feeling doon is pinagbigyan niya ako na maging captain ball pa. ’Yun ang pinakamasarap na feeling.”

Alejandro added Jarin is a like a father to him, even though the multi-titled coach took over the Bulldogs only this season.

“Parang kami, father figure siya sa amin. Mas marami pa kwentuhan namin na hindi about basketball. Every night, magtetext siya ng ramdom. Extra special ‘yun para sa akin,” said Alejandro.

Alejandro’s collegiate career ended after NU lost to UP, 106-81, eliminating the Bulldogs from Final Four contention.

“Didn’t go well. Parang the whole game was up-and-down. Parang roller coaster. Babalik kami tapos lalamangan. Pero ganun talaga. There is defeat in every situation. Hands off sa mga teammates ko na hindi sila nawalan ng pag-asa all throughout the season,” said Alejandro.

As for future plans, Alejandro said: “Siguro papahinga muna ako, have time with my family. After that, magpapa-draft ako sa D-League.”
