NU's J-Jay Alejandro says striking resemblance to Terrence Romeo mere coincidence
NU guard J-Jay Alejandro says it was purely coincidental that he had the similar hairstyle and jersey number as PBA star Terrence Romeo. Jaime Campos

J-JAY Alejandro said he made no effort to emulate Terrence Romeo after sporting a look similar to the PBA star in National University’s winning debut in UAAP Season 79 over the University of the East.

Alejandro said he long planned to wear full braids after growing his hair long for the last six months, but time constraints forced him to settle for a hairstyle Romeo became known for with GlobalPort and Gilas Pilipinas.

“Dapat kasi ibe-braids ko talaga pero masyadong matagal. Medyo masakit pa,” said Alejandro, insisting the resemblance to the GlobalPort star was purely coincidental.

The NU guard, though, looked good on the floor in helping the Bulldogs win their season opener, scoring 13 points including two triples in their 72-66 win over the Red Warriors.

Incidentally, Alejandro has also sported the No. 7 jersey for NU this season, the same number Romeo wears in the PBA. But Alejandro said he was only getting his old number back after giving way to teammate Kyle Neypes last season.

“Nung nag-champion kami, No. 7 jersey ako. Pagpasok ko sa NU, No. 7 na lang ‘yung available. Pero last year, hiniram ni (Kyle) Neypes, nag-No. 12 muna ako,” said Alejandro.

Romeo, for his part, didn't do too badly himself, scoring 26 points for GlobalPort in a 106-133 loss to Alaska. However, the flamboyant star was fined P2,600 by the PBA for a techical foul assessed on him for 'disrespecting a game official.'
