NU Bulldogs back on track with squeaker over lowly UST Tigers

NATIONAL University got back on track, beating winless University of Santo Tomas, 94-84, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 80 basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Bulldogs, coming off a loss to titleholder La Salle, hiked their record to 2-1, while sending the Growling Tigers to their third loss.

Issa Gaye had a double-double of 17 points, 13 rebounds with four blocks for the Bulldogs, who took control in the endgame by outscoring the Tigers, 24-11.

"Coming into the game, I really felt that it is going to be a hard one. UST is down 0-2 coming into this game so we knew coach Boy Sablan and the rest of his coaching staff, together with his boys, they will come out slugging and play their best," said NU coach Jamike Jarin.

Dave Yu also played quality minutes for NU and delivered 13 points in 18 minutes, while J-Jay Alejandro delivered 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Regie Basibas added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers, who were up, 73-70, at the end of the third quarter.

NU had a 10-0 burst to turn a 77-78 deficit into an 87-78 lead in the fourth period.
