NATIONAL University juniors coach Goldwin Monteverde said he is staying with the Bullpups following an offer to take over the University of the East seniors basketball team in the UAAP.

Monteverde said he indeed receive an offer to coach UE in the UAAP after the Red Warriors’ coaching job became vacant.

While he thanked the Red Warriors for the offer, Monteverde said he decided to stay with the Bullpups as he didn’t want to leave his players, especially after Adamson players joined him in transfering to NU.

Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano left Adamson to move to NU when Monteverde accepted the coaching job with the Bullpups.

“Sa UE naman, na-offer ako na mag-coach sa seniors,” said Monteverde after NU won the NBTC title. “It took time to really think about it kasi hindi siya madaling desisyon.”

“Pero I have to respect ‘yung siyempre, I had some players from Adamson that came with me. Ayoko naman na porket may offer, bigla ko sila iiwan,” said Monteverde.

“Maybe next time, magkakaroon uli,” he said.

Former KIA coach in the and now mentor of the Valenzuela Classic in the MPBL coach Chris Gavina has emerged as one of the candidates for the UE job.

UE women’s basketball assistant coach Melvin Reyes remains in charge of the Red Warriors on an interim basis.
