UNIVERSITY of the East defeated University of the Philippines, 80-67, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 79 basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The lowly Red Warriors spoiled the Fighting Maroons’ bid to finish the season with a flourish, taking control with a 22-11 second quarter en route to only their third win in 13 outings.

The loss capped the collegiate careers of Jett Manuel, Dave Moralde, and Henri Asilum for the Maroons, who finished Season 79 with a 5-9 win-loss record.

Philip Manalang had 14 points and six rebounds, while Bon Batiller, recovering from a bad fall he sustained in the second period, scored seven of his 14 points in the second half.

The also-ran Red Warriors have one game left against Far Eastern University on Wednesday.

“I think this is the best shooting game that we have in a long while,” said UE coach Derrick Pumaren, referring to the team’s 29-of-73 clip from the field. “They fought well out there. We know that we are out but we want to season with respect.”

Manuel and Moralde had 13 points each for the Maroons, who fell behind by as many as 25 points.

The Maroons, nevertheless, finished with their best win total in 10 years.
