DE La Salle has named former Green Archer Cholo Villanueva the new head coach of the school’s women’s basketball team.

La Salle athletic director Emmanuel ‘Nongnong’ Calanog confirmed Villanueva has been with the team for a month already as he takes over the post vacated by Tyrone Bautista, who stepped down as coach of the Lady Archers to take a basketball managerial job in Thailand.

Calanog said Villanueva was appointed mainly due to his coaching experience.

A former La Salle assistant coach of both the men and women’s teams, Villanueva had been part of the coaching staff of Vergel Meneses with Jose Rizal University recently.

Villanueva played for the Taft-based school from 2001 to 2007. He was named co-Finals MVP with JVee Casio during his final season with the team when the Green Archers swept the University of the East Warriors to win the UAAP varsity title.

“He was already an assistant coach of the women’s team and some of the girls in the team, he actually knows them from the time that he was the assistant,” said Calanog.

Villanueva has also brought another former Green Archer and Ginebra cager in JR Aquino to be part of his coaching staff.
