Boy Sablan, a former teammate and later assistant of Pido Jarencio at UST, has been tasked to take charge of the Tigers, replacing Bong Dela Cruz. Jerome Ascano

BOY Sablan will call the shots for University of Santo Tomas coach in UAAP Season 79 but Pido Jarencio is expected to take over the following year, a source told SPIN.ph.

A source confirmed that Sablan is set to take over as UST coach for the new season, replacing Bong Dela Cruz. Sablan’s hiring was first reported by Rick Olivares of Rappler.

According to a SPIN.ph source, Sablan was only guaranteed one season as UST coach and will likely slide down to an assistant coach role unless he enjoys considerable success.

Jarencio, a longtime UST coach who guided the Tigers to the 2006 UAAP championship, is set to be replaced as GlobalPort coach by either Johnedel Cardel or Erick Gonzales.

The source added that among the things that is keeping Jarencio from taking the job is his contract with GlobalPort, where he was recently named chief of basketball operations.

Sablan, an assistant coach at Blackwater in the PBA, was part of the UST Tigers staff when Jarencio was in charge. He was also a teammate of Jarencio in the UST side that reached the 1984 UAAP Finals where the Tigers lost to a University of the East side led by Allan Caidic and Jerry Codinera.
