Ateneo overcomes La Salle, sets up showdown vs unbeaten champ NU for UAAP women's cage crown
Danica Jose, extreme right, had 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Ateneo Lady Eagles advanced to the UAAP women's basketball finals.

ATENEO turned back rival beat De La Salle, 62-50, on Saturday, to set up a titular showdown for the UAAP Season 78 women’s championship against unbeaten  reigning champion National University.

Hazelle Yam had 15 points, Jolina Go with 13, and Danica Jose added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, who overcame the Lady Archers’ twice-to-beat disadvantage in the stepladder phase.

It was an amazing route on the way to the finals for Ateneo.

The Lady Eagles beat University of Santo Tomas in a playoff for the no. 4 seed in the Final Four after both teams finished with 6-8 (win-loss) slates.

They went on and overcome third seed University of the East before twice winning over second seed La Salle, which finished with a 12-2 record.

But the biggest test for Ateneo will be the finals, where the reigning champs Lady Bulldogs enjoy a thrice-to-beat advantage following a 14-game sweep of the eliminations.

Ateneo reached the finals for the first time since 2007 when Cassy Tioseco and AJ Barracoso led the Lady Eagles.

Yam, Go, and Jose scored 19 of the team’s 24 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Lady Eagles, who sent the Lady Archers to their third straight defeat.
