Ateneo locks down CJ Cansino as Blue Eaglets tame Tiger Cubs to stretch unbeaten run to eight

ATENEO trounced University of Santo Tomas, 78-54, on Saturday to remain unbeaten at the start of the second round of the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Dave Ildefonso finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the Blue Eaglets, who upped their mark to 8-0.

SJ Belangel had 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Kai Sotto had 11 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks for Ateneo, which had its defense focused on CJ Cansino.

Cansino, the leading MVP candidate after the first round, had 16 points and 12 rebounds, but shot 6-of-20 from the field.

“Actually, we were expecting a shaky start on offense. The boys had midterms, hindi sila nakapag-practice ng todo. But we told the boys just played defense, the offense will follow,” said Ateneo coach Joe Silva.

Vince Dolendo had 10 points for the Tiger Cubs, who slipped to 5-3.

After trailing 13-18 at the end of the first quarter, Ateneo had a 22-9 second period to take a 35-27 lead at the half.
