DE LA Salle-Zobel standout Aljun Melecio is more motivated to improve his game after being named as part of the Mythical selection of UAAP Season 77 juniors basketball tournament.

Melecio is the only underclassman in the team that included Ateneo seniors Mike and Matt Nieto, Mark Dyke of National University, and Frederick Tungcab of Adamson.

The 16-year-old Melecio said the individual award serves as motivation not just for him but on helping the team to even get better next season.

“Sobrang thankful ako. Hindi ko in-expect ‘yun. Mas lalo pa akong mag-wowork hard para mas lalo kaming mag-improve next season,” said Melecio, a 5-foot-9 point guard.

Everything is not yet over though for Melecio and the rest of the Junior Archers after they eliminated Adamson, 87-81, on Friday to move into the next phase of the stepladder semis.

La Salle-Zobel will next face reigning champion National University, with the Ayala Alabang-based school needing to win twice over the Bullpups to make the finals against top seed Ateneo.

Stopping Dyke will be the key for De La Salle-Zobel if the team hopes to overcome NU’s twice-to-beat advantage, according to Melecio.

Dyke finished second in the MVP race after averaging 13.4 points and 14.5 rebounds for the Bullpups.

“Siyempre paghahandaan po namin ‘yun pero dapat namin ma-stop si Dyke,” said Melecio.

The third-year high school cager hopes the Junior Archers will bring with them the same attitude they had against Adamson in their game against NU.

“’Yung energy kasi namin nung una, parang talo na talaga. Pero nag-usap-usap kami na kayang kaya ‘yan, puso lang, at run the system. First half, na-stop namin sila at na-swertehan namin na naka-una kami, said Melecio.
