CHRIS Newsome scored a season-high 23 points and Kiefer Ravena put the finishing touches to another Ateneo win with another clutch jumper as Ateneo repeated over University of the East, 78-73, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Newsome set the tone for the Blue Eagles' seventh win in nine outings in the UAAP men's basketball tournament, scoring 12 points in the first half while Ravena hit the game-clinching three-pointer with 14.2 seconds left in the fourth for a 76-72 cushion.

With the victory, Ateneo regained solo first place after losing to archrival De La Salle on Sunday and Blue Eagles coach Bo Perasol perfectly summed up the victory with one line.

“Nag-bake sila (Kiefer’s teammates) tapos si Kiefer ang naglagay ng icing,” said Perasol.

Newsome got his offense going as he shot 5-of-11 from the field and 13-of-21 free throws. He also had six rebounds, two assists, two steals, three blocks for the Blue Eagles.

Ravena’s 16-point production was a far cry from the career-high 38 he scored in their first round match against UE. But the leading MVP contender also had eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals for the Blue Eagles while coming up with the game's biggest basket.

The Blue Eagles lost a 68-62 lead midway through the fourth quarter and had to earn the win in another tight finish.

The Red Warriors tied the game with a running shot by Mark Olayon with 1:44 left in the game. Ravena hit two free throws and Renz Palma split his charities for UE as Ateneo took a 73-72 lead, setting the stage for Ravena’s heroics.

Charles Mammie had 15 points while Roi Sumang, who scored 30 in his previous match against Ateneo, had 10 for the Red Warriors, who dropped to 4-5 (win-loss).
