ADAMSON and University of the East square off in a UAAP Season 79 basketball match-up featuring a coaching battle between the Pumaren brothers.

The Falcons and the Red Warriors collide at 12 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena with an interesting sidelight as Franz Pumaren battles older brother Derrick in the sidelines.

Franz and Derrick have yet to face each other in a UAAP coaching matchup. When Derrick was coach of La Salle in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Franz was still playing for San Miguel in the PBA.

When Franz was the mentor of La Salle when the Green Archers beat University of the East during the 2007 UAAP finals, it was Dindo who was the head coach of the Red Warriors.

It is all business, says the Pumaren brothers.

“Just like facing La Salle, we have our own obligation and goals. It’s nothing personal. It’s just that we have that we have to do our own goals with our respective schools,” said Franz.

Both teams are coming off losses to league-leading La Salle, and Adamson is favored to bounce back as it takes on UE, winless in six outings.

“What’s so scary about UE is they are due to explode already. That’s not the team I’ve seen in the preseason and in the last couple of months. I think they are due for a good game. We have to prepare for that,” said Franz.

UE did fairly well against La Salle and despite the loss, will be entering the match against Adamson confident.

“We just have to use the second half against La Salle as a springboard when we play Adamson. We played to our potential and hopefully, we can carry it when we play them,” said Derrick.
