CEU eyes fifth straight college basketball title as 46th season of Women's NCAA comes off the wraps

CENTRO Escolar University starts its bid for a fifth straight seniors title when the 46th season of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association opens off on Friday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

CEU will face host school Philippine Women’s University at 2:30 p.m. after the 11:30 a.m. opener featuring juniors teams De La Salle Zobel and La Salle College Antipolo. St. Paul College Pasig clashes with St. Jude Catholic School at 1 p.m. in the midgets category.

PWU athletic director Mariel Benitez said as host school they not only aim to win games but to empower women through sports.

“We aspire to win the overall championship. We’d like to empower and unify women through sports in our league,” said Benitez, former skipper of the Philippine national football team Malditas.

Ada Milby of the Lady Volcanoes, who bagged the bronze medal in the 28th Southeast Asian Games, will be the guest speaker for the opening ceremonies.

Volleyball action will also start on Friday at St. Scholastica’s College with seniors defending champion Rizal Technological College squaring off with PWU at 12 p.m.

Futsal opens on Sunday with four matches, with last year’s runner up Rizal Technological University battling PWU at 11 a.m.

Looking to end CEU’s reign as overall champion are Angelicum College, Assumption College Antipolo, Chiang Kai Shek College, Miriam College, Saint Pedro Poveda College, San Beda College Alabang, St. Stephen’s High School and University of Asia and the Pacific.

Competitions in badminton, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, softball, tennis, cheerleading and poomsae are set in 2016.
